It doesn't seem that long ago that this competition was used by the top clubs to field a virtually unrecognisable starting 11, mainly playing the younger players.

This year however, City, Chelsea, United, Spurs, Liverpool and Arsenal all have fairly strong sides out.  What has changed for this to happen?

I think that United were always going to play a stronger team after last seasons shambolic display at MK Dons, think that theres only 3 or 4 players still at the club that were in the 18 that day!

Arsenal made 11 changes so pretty much the second team. However the NLD is never gonna be a small game. Also think loan system has made a difference - Arsenal for example have a lot of youngsters out on loan atm - Zelalem, Sanogo etc...

Also when you have 25 top class players in your squad why play youngsters ? these league cup games are now very valuable to the clubs with bigger squads.
